MADAMPE: Renovation of the neglected Hamilton canal which was not in use for decades. Is underway.
The canal was used for transporting goods from Colombo to Puttalam, during the Dutch era. With the passage of time, the authorities neglected the water way which became a nuisance to the public.
A stretch of the canal from Nattandiya to Kudawewa was renovated recently.
The Disaster management Ministry granted Rs. 2 million to the Puttalam District Council, to renovate the balance portion of the canal to renovate the stretch from Tummodara to Nattandiya in the first stage of the restoration work.
Work on the second stage will commence to restore the canal upto Walahapitiya Bridge. The area beyond Walahapitiya bridge belongs to the Mahawewa Secretariat Division. To facilitate the transport of goods and people is not the sole aim of the project.
The canal renovation will also protect the area from frequent floods. The proper maintenance of the canal will prevent the dumping of animal offal and factory effluents into the canal which not only blocked the flow of water, but also affected the resident of the area by polluting it causing a bad stench.
Steps also will be taken to maintain the canal to prevent the growth of harmful aquatic flora, which impedes mobility.
Several squatter families have occupied land adjoining the canal and built houses. Eviction of illegal encroachers has became a burden on the Nattandiya Divisional Secretariat Authorities.
